Character Demographics:

Fandom: Torchwood (Doctor Who)
Name: Ianto Jones

Education: Took one of those secretarial correspondence courses while he was at barista school. No, really, he read at one of the constituent colleges of the University of Wales.
Religion: Calvinist Methodist/Presbyterian Church of Wales (Eglwys Bresbyteraidd Cymru)
Occupation: Office boy (Receptionist at a top-secret alien-fighting, technology-gathering organization in and under important landmarks. Makes the coffee, drives the big black SUV with the satellite dish on top, cleans up after everybody.)
Significant Other: Did have, once. She died.
Sexual Preference: Flexible.

Character Biography:

History: Born and raised in Southwest Wales (Newport, which is east of Cardiff, third largest city in Wales). Went to University. Started out at Torchwood London, but after the Battle of Canary Wharf, relocated to Torchwood 3 in Cardiff, a sort of return home. Life wasn't easy in Cardiff, though, because his colleagues ignored him, his boss was prone to harassment, and there was his girlfriend, Lisa, to deal with. She had been at Torchwood in London as well, and relocated with Ianto. But it didn't work out, and he found himself more alone than ever. He made efforts to get to know his colleagues as well as atone for his actions during that difficult time, especially with his boss, 'Captain' Jack Harkness. (Although Aternaville Ianto is post-Torchwood, Aternaville Jack is not; this means that although Ianto knows--ahem--Jack, Jack does not yet know Ianto. Ahh, the wonders of time travel and fudging the timeline a little! I'm also leaving the details deliberately vague until the season runs its course, so I don't get sickeningly jossed--there are only thirteen episodes, and it's the seventh this Sunday, so--depending on the breaks for holidays--it should be done sometime in January or perhaps February.)
Personality: Ianto believes in doing as thorough and sincere a job as he can, and doing it with minimal fuss. He seems to melt in and out of the wainscoting, always appearing just when he is needed and then vanishing again so that he is never in the way. He is quiet; he doesn't speak much, although 'laconic' is not an appropriate descriptor for his kind of quietness. It's more that he doesn't pipe up at all, and one tends to forget he is there. One would never question him. He is quite neat and extremely self-sacrificing, so it's easy to take advantage of him and make him clean up all your messes, especially as he doesn't complain much (or rather, only does so in extraordinary circumstances). He is accustomed to be the reliable one, the one others depend on but don't thank much, and although he finds it horrid, absolutely detests it, he puts up with it, too, and doesn't speak up on his own behalf. Part of this is because he has been repressing his ego for the sake of a greater purpose; by now, it's difficult to say just how much. One catches glimpses of his other aspects: his cutting wit, for instance, every once in a while surfaces in a sort of hit-and-run sarcastic remark; and his deeply-felt emotions, both good and bad. One might blame that on his youth, or perhaps on the fact that he's Welsh. Ianto is also very devoted.
Personality in seven words or less: Reliable, devoted, neat, quiet, ironic, deliberate, efficient
How Others Perceive Your Character: They almost don't; Ianto is remarkably good at blending into the woodwork, and since the incident with Lisa, hasn't quite shaken the habit. He will appear out of the wainscoting at opportune moments to offer coffee, tea, and Chinese food, then fade away again as though he was never there. And then every once in a while he'll say something dryly ironic, and you realize that there is a person behind the perfectly pressed suit and the pristine shirt. People tend to overlook him--when everyone else at the office goes out for drinks, he doesn't get invited, not so much out of spite as out of negligence. Yet you soon find you can't function without him: he wordlessly picks up after everybody; takes care of the non-glamorous, dirty work; and makes sure everything happens smoothly and on time. And he makes a brilliant cup of coffee.
Beliefs, Convictions, Morals: It may seem self-contradictory, but Ianto has both a strong faith in people and doesn't have much trust in them. He's young. He may not be completely sheltered, but up until Torchwood he was basically an innocent. And even after Canary Wharf, he was so dedicated, he had such faith--he went to Cardiff after that, and saw a lot of bad things being done by all sorts of people, and it's shaken his worldview. A lot. Still, although he's lost his naïveté, he hasn't quite let go of his belief that things can be made to turn out right, if he just works hard enough at it. There was a lot of violence at Torchwood, and Ianto doesn't get that adrenaline rush the others seemed to get from it. He'll go along and do what needs to be done for Queen and Country (and the whole planet, and for those he comes to care for), but he's often the last person to pull out his gun. And yet it isn't as though he doesn't know how to fight--you can't grow up in the sort of communities he has and not know.
Reason(s) for Escaping to Canada: Dedicated research and a fair amount of reading between the lines led Ianto to believe that The Doctor might be in Aternaville. He's come looking for him.
Their DHAs [Dreams, Hopes, and Aspirations] for Canada: To find the Doctor to help with a problem he has, mostly.

Twenty-Questions for the Characters:

1. What turns them on: A little attention (and maybe a little manhandling).
2. What turns them off: Violence, and people getting off on it.
3. Would they see a shrink: At this point, not certain it would help.
4. Worst Childhood experience: Once, when he was maybe ten years old, his mum went out on to do the shopping and left him in charge. He was so engrossed in whatever it was he was doing--he doesn't even remember what it was that was so important he had to shut himself in another room and close the door for--he didn't notice how quiet it had gotten. They had to take his sister to hospital in an ambulance and everything.
5. Favorite Film: 'Sex is Comedy' (Guilty runner-up: 'Secretary')
6. Favorite Song: 'Lisa lân' or Mogwai's 'We're No Here' [sic], depending on how he is feeling
7. Favorite Word: 'sir'
8. Least Favorite Word: 'Tightarse'
9. Favorite Curse Word: 'Cachau bant' (Favorite PHRASE is 'Cadwch Cymru yn lan. Danfonwch y sbwriel i Loegr!')
10. Best gift ever received: His scholarship.
11. Sound or Noise they hate: Screaming. People or metal, both give him the shudders.
12. Sound or Noise they love: Before Canary Wharf, it was the sound of a crackling fire, but now...
13. Do they know the answer to 64 million dollar question: No.
14. [Complete the sentence] ... All the world's a stage...
'And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side,
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.'
15. Did Yoko Ono really break up the Fab Four: Team loyalty is rather overrated, isn't it? Love conquers all (or dies trying).
16. Chuck Norris or Bruce Lee: Doesn't care.
17. Half full or half empty: Empty, and he's the one who has to clear it up.
18. Coke or Pepsi: Either will be fine, thank you.
19. If they were a Jellybean flavor, which one: Café Latte
20. And, finally, if Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? Anything's all right really as long as it isn't a request for coffee.
